1. As white as a sheet
Seguro que se quedó as white as a sheet. 🙂
Otro ejemplo:
"Bill, you're as white as a sheet! Are you alright?"
2. Raise a white flag
Ejemplos:
"After studying English for 28 years and eight months, Marta was about to raise a white flag. Luckily, before throwing in the towel, she found the Speak English Now podcast!"
Aquí aparece también to throw in the towel, otra expresión que puede significar rendirse.
"That's it! You win. I raise the white flag. You can eat all the chocolate you want," my friend told his five-year-old son.
"Carol was convinced that she was right. So I just raised my white flag in the end."
3. Whitewash something
Ejemplo:
"The company was trying to whitewash the scandal."
4. White elephant
¿Recuerdas la expresión the elephant in the room?
Es solo una broma. Lo importante es recordar que white elephant y elephant in the room son expresiones distintas.
Ahora escuchemos un ejemplo con white elephant:
Ejemplo:
"A friend gave me a cat as a present. I really wish he hadn't, because for me it's a white elephant. I'm allergic to cats!"
5. White as a ghost
Ejemplo:
"You know, the movie wasn't that scary, though after watching it, my sister was white as a ghost!"
6. A white lie
Ejemplo:
"Yesterday I didn't feel like going to work, so I told my boss a white lie. I told him I was under the weather."
7. White collar
Ejemplo:
"There are more vacancies for white-collar workers than for blue-collar workers."
Repasemos las expresiones una vez más:
1. As white as a sheet
2. Raise a white flag
3. Whitewash something
4. White elephant
5. White as a ghost
6. A white lie
7. White collar
