Hola a todos. Soy Georgiana, tu profesora de inglés. Mi misión es ayudarte a hablar inglés con fluidez.
Hoy vamos a hablar de lo que suele ocurrir justo después de terminar las vacaciones y aprenderemos varias expresiones en inglés relacionadas con el color azul.
Después practicaremos la expresión oral con una mini-historia.
Me alegra mucho volver y conectar contigo. ¿Cómo estás? ¿Te sientes descansado y contento o quizá estás feeling blue?
Estamos en septiembre y, para muchas personas, eso significa que las vacaciones de verano han terminado.
Durante el verano he descansado, tomado el sol y disfrutado del tiempo libre. En inglés podemos decir que he recharged my batteries: he recargado las pilas.
Me gusta estar cerca de la playa, disfrutar del sol y la brisa del mar y comer algo rico. También he conseguido disconnect, desconectar de la rutina.
¿Y tú? ¿Cómo consigues desconectar de las preocupaciones cotidianas?
Precisamente al hablar de desconectar y descansar aparece una expresión interesante:
post-holiday blues, la tristeza o bajón que algunas personas sienten al volver de las vacaciones.
¿Sabías que blue es uno de los colores favoritos de muchísima gente? En inglés, además, el color azul aparece en varias expresiones relacionadas con la tristeza, la nostalgia o el desánimo.
Dos expresiones muy comunes son feel blue y get the blues.
Ejemplos:
“It seems that you are feeling blue. Is there something wrong?”
Parece que estás triste. ¿Pasa algo?
“Ann gets the blues every Christmas holiday. She lives away from home, so she misses her family.”
Ann se pone triste cada Navidad porque vive lejos y echa de menos a su familia.
También existe el género musical the blues, caracterizado históricamente por temas y melodías que a menudo expresan tristeza o melancolía.
Otra expresión es blue Monday, que puede utilizarse para hablar de un lunes especialmente triste o desanimado.
Volvamos a los post-holiday blues: ese estado de ánimo que algunas personas experimentan después de regresar de un viaje largo o unas vacaciones.
Aunque unas vacaciones prolongadas pueden ser fantásticas, también tienen un downside, una parte menos agradable: volver a la rutina puede costar.
Algunas personas notan cansancio, nostalgia, falta de ganas o cierta tristeza. Si además has viajado a un lugar con una diferencia horaria importante, puede sumarse el jet lag.
Así que, si tus vacaciones han sido cortas, puedes consolarte pensando que quizá te resulte más fácil volver a la rutina.
¿Qué puedes hacer para superar mejor la vuelta?
1) Intenta llegar a casa al menos un día antes de reincorporarte al trabajo. Puede resultar tentador alargar el viaje hasta el último minuto, pero dormir una noche en tu propia cama ayuda a recuperar el ritmo.
2) Deshaz la maleta cuanto antes. Dejarla abierta durante días puede convertirse en un recordatorio constante de que las vacaciones ya han terminado. Y sí, también toca hacer la colada.
3) Planea algo agradable para el futuro. No tiene por qué ser un gran viaje; simplemente tener un plan puede darte ilusión y facilitar la vuelta a la rutina.
4) Cocina algún plato que te haya gustado durante las vacaciones. Es una manera sencilla de conservar una parte positiva del viaje.
5) Reserva también algo de tiempo para descansar en casa antes de llenar la agenda de compromisos.
Y, por supuesto, siempre puedes aprovechar la vuelta para recuperar la práctica de inglés con una nueva mini-historia.

They returned to the stressful life of New York just a few hours before the first day of work.

No. They returned just a few hours before the first day of work.
Did they return to New York?
Yes. They returned to New York.
Is the life of New York peaceful?
No, no. Life in New York isn't peaceful but stressful.
Both of them went through the post-holiday blues for a long time. It lasted for 11 months!
What did Jimmy and Kim have?
A post-holiday blues.
Did the post-holiday blues last ten months?
No. Not ten months. It lasted 11 months.
How did they feel? Happy or blue?
Blue. They didn't feel happy. They felt blue.
Did they get the blues after returning to New York?
Yes. They got the blues. They were sad after coming back from Italy.
Now they're planning on visiting Spain 🇪🇸.

We don't know because that's a different story.
