Hoy vamos a ver cómo pedir y dar indicaciones en inglés. Por ejemplo, cuando quieres ir a un restaurante y necesitas preguntar cómo llegar.

Empecemos. Saber pedir indicaciones es muy útil cuando visitas un lugar por primera vez y estás un poco perdido.
Sí, hoy en día podemos mirar el GPS en el móvil y muchas veces ya no necesitamos preguntar a nadie. Pero piensa en esto: pedir indicaciones es una oportunidad excelente para practicar inglés.
En este episodio veremos algunas de las expresiones más habituales, con ejemplos.
Una de las formas más útiles de preguntar es:
“Excuse me, how do I get to ___?”
“Could you tell me the best way to get to ___?”
Por ejemplo, si quieres saber cómo llegar a Times Square, puedes decir:
“Excuse me, how do I get to Times Square?”
También puedes preguntar:
“What is the quickest way to get to the movies?”
“Excuse me. Where’s the nearest post office, please?”
“Excuse me. I’m looking for ___.”
Y si ya estás muy cerca de tu destino, puedes formular una pregunta sencilla:
“Where is the hotel?”
Si te pierdes, esta pregunta también puede ayudarte:
“Where exactly am I?”
Muy bien. Ahora veamos cómo dar indicaciones.
Estas son algunas frases básicas para orientar a alguien por la calle:
TURN LEFT = gira a la izquierda.
TURN RIGHT = gira a la derecha.
GO STRAIGHT AHEAD = sigue todo recto.
Un ejemplo:
“Sorry, what is the quickest way to get to the city center?”
“It is easy. Go straight ahead and then turn right.”
También pueden indicarte que tomes la primera, segunda o tercera calle. En inglés se utiliza mucho el verbo take en este contexto.
Veamos el mismo tipo de ejemplo:
“Excuse me, could you tell me the best way to get to the city center?”
“It is easy. Go straight ahead and take the second street on the right.”
Otro ejemplo:
“Sorry, how do I get to the mall?”
“Very easy. Cross the street and turn right. Go straight ahead and take the third street on the left. Cross the square, and you will see the mall.”
Aquí tienes otras expresiones útiles para dar indicaciones:
Go past = pasa de largo por un lugar hasta dejarlo atrás.
Go across = cruza algo, por ejemplo una calle o un cruce.
Go up = sube, por ejemplo una cuesta.
Go down = baja, por ejemplo una cuesta.
Go out of = sal de un lugar.
Go through = atraviesa algo, como un túnel o una localidad.
Terminemos esta parte con algunas preguntas muy útiles para pedir indicaciones en inglés.
No olvides empezar con “Excuse me” cuando te diriges a una persona.
“How can I get to the airport?”
“Where can I find a bank?”
“How do I get to the city center?”
“Could you tell me where the hospital is?”
“I’m looking for a hotel.”
“Do you know where the museum is?”

The third street. Martha had to go straight ahead and take the third street on the right.
The man continued: "Cross the square and turn right at the corner."
Did Martha have to cross a park?
No. Martha did not have to cross a park but a square.
Did Martha have to jump over the square?
No, she did not have to jump over it. She had to cross it and then turn right.
Did Martha have to turn right before crossing the square?
No. She had to cross the square and then turn right.
The man ended by saying, "You can't miss it.
Did the man say the directions were clear?
Yes, according to the man, the directions were clear.
Were the man’s directions unclear?
No. No. His directions were clear.
What was clear?
The man’s directions were clear.
Martha followed the directions and arrived at the same place where she started.
Did Martha follow the man’s directions?
Yes. She followed the man’s directions.
Who followed the directions? The man?
No, not the man. The man gave the directions to Martha, and she followed them.
Did Martha arrive at the same place where she started?
Yes. Martha followed the directions and arrived at the same place where she started.
Martha realized that she had followed the man's instructions backward, and that’s why she returned to the same place.
