Un proverb es un refrán o dicho popular que expresa una idea general sobre la vida. Muchos proverbios tienen un significado más amplio que la suma literal de sus palabras.
A diferencia de muchos idioms, los proverbios suelen ser algo más fáciles de interpretar, aunque también pueden tener un sentido figurado o filosófico.
1) Growing old is mandatory. Growing up? Definitely optional.
Envejecer es inevitable; «hacerse adulto» en la forma de pensar o comportarse se presenta aquí como algo opcional. El humor está en separar la edad física de la actitud.
2) Wise men don’t need advice. Fools won’t take it.
La idea es que una persona verdaderamente sabia sabe aprender y actuar, mientras que un fool puede negarse a aceptar un buen consejo.
3) Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.
No necesitamos cometer personalmente todos los errores posibles. Observar lo que les sucede a otros también puede enseñarnos mucho.
4) There is no difference between a wise man and a fool when they fall in love.
Este proverbio bromea con la idea de que el enamoramiento puede hacer que incluso una persona muy sensata actúe de manera poco racional.
5) A closed mouth catches no flies.
En sentido figurado, aconseja hablar menos cuando decir demasiado puede meternos en problemas. Se parece a la idea de keep your mouth shut.
6) Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
Literalmente significa no morder más de lo que puedes masticar. Figuradamente, significa no asumir más trabajo, responsabilidad o dificultad de la que realmente puedes manejar.
Los proverbios son útiles porque combinan vocabulario, cultura y significado figurado. Cuando encuentres uno nuevo, intenta entender primero la imagen literal y después la idea más profunda.

When I was younger, I needed some advice because I was completely in love with a girl and didn't know how to approach her.
So I went to visit an eccentric man who lived on the top of a mountain and called himself the "proverbial guru."
I found the guru sitting on a rock, with his eyes closed. Since I didn't want to disturb him too much, I just whispered, "Master, could you tell me a proverb about love? I need to win a girl's heart."
The guru didn't move nor open his eyes. He just said, "Contemplate...".
Not satisfied with the answer, I whispered the same question again.
The guru said, "Differentiate...".
After hearing that, I was furious, and yet, I patiently asked the man for some clarification.
And the guru’s answer was: "Fluctuate...".
At that moment, I started yelling: "That doesn't make any sense! Please explain yourself!"
The guru opened his eyes and looked surprised. He said: "Good day to you! You know, I am a pro-verb guru, which means that I'm in favor of verbs! I love verbs, and I was reviewing my favorite ones!
Regarding your question, buy her some flowers and be nice".
Astonished, I left the place and followed his advice. Nowadays, I'm happily married to the girl of my dreams.

David and Tony needed some advice because they were both completely in love with the same girl and didn't know how to approach her.
