Hola. Soy Georgiana, tu profesora de inglés. Hoy vamos a aprender phrasal verbs con el verbo GIVE.
Los phrasal verbs se aprenden mucho mejor en contexto que como una lista aislada. Por eso veremos el significado y después ejemplos reales en inglés.
1. Give something away
Significa dar algo gratis, como regalo o donación.
“They give away a free chocolate bar for every $100 you spend in the supermarket.”
“Tina gave her old clothes away when she lost weight.”
2. Give oneself / somebody away
Puede significar revelar involuntariamente dónde está alguien o qué está haciendo cuando intenta mantenerlo en secreto. También puede ser revelar algo sobre uno mismo o traicionar a otra persona.
“Mia smiled, but her voice gave her away.”
“Tom gave away classified information to the competition.”
3. Give in
Significa rendirse, aceptar que has sido derrotado o, en otros contextos, terminar aceptando lo que otra persona quiere después de haberte negado durante un tiempo.
“After being surrounded, the enemy gave in.”
“My son insisted so much that I buy a cell phone, I finally gave in.”
4. Give out
Puede indicar que algo deja de funcionar correctamente, se agota o pierde fuerza.
“After running for 30 minutes, my legs finally gave out.”
“The students wouldn’t listen, so his patience finally gave out.”
5. Give something over to somebody
Significa entregar a otra persona la responsabilidad o el control de algo.
“Our boss gave most of his work over to his assistant.”
“The assistant gave herself over completely to her work.”
6. Give up
Significa dejar de intentar algo, abandonar o renunciar.
“Because of health problems, he was forced to give up his job.”
“Everybody knows my mom never gives up.”
7. Give somebody up / give yourself up
Puede significar entregar a alguien a la policía o entregarse uno mismo.
“When he was surrounded, the criminal gave himself up.”
“The private detective gave the criminal up to the police.”
“She remorsefully gave herself up to the police.”
