En este episodio voy a enseñarte una forma muy interesante de practicar inglés en tu propia ciudad. Después trabajaremos con una historia para seguir mejorando.

Imagina una actividad en la que puedas practicar inglés escuchando y hablando, conocer gente interesante, descubrir temas nuevos y, además, mejorar tus habilidades de public speaking. Todo eso puede estar disponible en tu ciudad.
La organización se llama Toastmasters.
Toastmasters es una organización educativa non-profit cuyo objetivo es ayudar a las personas a desarrollar sus habilidades para hablar en público. Cuenta con clubes en numerosos países y ciudades.
¿Qué ocurre en una reunión de Toastmasters? Normalmente los miembros preparan varios discursos y los presentan ante una audience. Después, otra persona realiza una breve evaluation del discurso para que todos puedan aprender y mejorar.
También existe una sección muy conocida llamada Table Topics. En ella se propone una situación o una pregunta y una persona del público debe realizar un discurso breve de forma impromptu, es decir, improvisada.
Puede parecer intimidante estar delante de un público sin saber exactamente qué vas a decir, pero suele ser una experiencia divertida y muy útil para salir de tu comfort zone.
El objetivo principal de un club Toastmasters es ofrecer un ambiente seguro y agradable para practicar. Además, muchos clubes realizan sus reuniones en inglés o de forma bilingüe, así que pueden convertirse en una oportunidad excelente para utilizar el idioma con otras personas.
También es una buena forma de conocer gente de diferentes países y escuchar acentos y maneras de expresarse distintas.
Yo misma fui miembro de un club Toastmasters y la experiencia fue muy gratificante: mejoré mi forma de hablar en público, aprendí sobre temas interesantes y conocí a personas estupendas.
Si tienes un club cerca, puedes asistir primero como invitado. Si te gusta la experiencia, después puedes valorar hacerte miembro.

Paul’s friend recommended him to visit a Toastmasters Club in the city. Paul was a bit hesitant because a public speaking club seemed intimidating. However, he thought it would be an excellent opportunity to practice his English, meet new people, and get out of his comfort zone.
He sent an email to the club to arrange a visit as a guest. When the day came, he got to the club on time. The session began. He saw that one of the members conducted all the sessions. The first part was three prepared speeches. The opening speech title was: “Managing your time”; the second one was: “What you can learn from waiting at the airport,” and the third one was: “Be your own doctor.” The speeches were fun, entertaining, and informative.
After each speech, there was an evaluation performed by another member of the club. It was constructive and positive feedback that helped the speaker to improve.
The second section was different. It was the Table Topics. A guy presented the topic: “Imagine you are the president of the United States, and you have to tell on TV there’s been contact with aliens.”
Paul was one of the volunteers and, although it was frightening, he had a lot of fun.
After the meeting, Paul met some of the members at a bar near the club location. It was a perfect end for that exciting day.
